I am reworking a pattern called the “Caron Crochet Granny Jacket” that I created for Yarnspirations a few years ago. At the time, we were promoting a new yarn (Caron Jumbo Ombre) so that is what I used for this project. I thought the jacket might look really fun if I used more traditional granny square colors and color changes. I dug through my yarn stash and came up with a set of bright colors and created these Bright Crochet Granny Squares!
The fun part about Granny Squares is that you can make them as big or small as you’d like. In this particular tutorial and pattern, it calls for granny squares made with 5 rounds as well as a set of granny squares made with 10 rounds.
So I chose 5 coordinating colors, one for each row. Unfortunately when I went to find the yarns online for purchase, I realized that Bernat Super Value in Soft Fern has been discontinued. I am so bummed! But feel free to replace this color with another shade of green (Red Heart Super Saver in Frosty Green or Bernat Super Value in Mint would work). Shop these colors HERE on Yarnspirations.com
While you are yarn shopping, you may want to snag a few skeins of Red Heart Super Saver in Turqua because I will be using this color to stitch the new Bright Granny Jacket together and add the arms/waist to it.
If you have never made a granny square before, I filmed a video tutorial for you to help with the process!
Here is the written pattern for the 5 round granny square:
Easy Crochet Granny Square:
Magic Ring, chain 3 (this counts as your first DC) and 2 DC, chain 2, 3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC, chain 2 and join to top of chain 3, slip stitch over to first chain 2 space
Round 2: Chain 3 + 2 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC in first chain space, chain 1, 3 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC in next chain space, chain 1, 3 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC in next chain space, chain 1, 3 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC in last chain space, chain 1 and join to top of chain 3, slip stitch over so you are working in first chain space.

Round 4-5: Continue working in rounds of granny stitches. Make 3 DC + chain 2 + 3 DC in the corners and 3 DC in each chain space in between the corners.
Fasten off after round 5 and weave in ends.

hi sarah, my name is nellie lyle and i have downloaded the gnomes for january and february. i am sad to admit that i am unable to get past row 21. i read the the printout instruction for february and thought i figured it out but when trying what i thought would get me past row 21, i find that i’m not seeing what need to be done to keep 21 blocks for rows 22 – 30. please can you help me with this????
thank you!

Sarah doesn’t respond to comments here on her blog. You’ll have an easier time getting her on Instagram.
To help troubleshoot, though: Are you decreasing on the correct side? For the rows in question, you need to decrease on one side and continue increasing on the other side to get the rectangular shape. Then you’ll decrease on both sides to finish and close the rectangle.

I just want to say thank you. I started crocheting again when covid had us all quarantined. I learned as a kid and did a lot wrong. Eventually I found you tube and finally you! You have to be my favorite blogger. Because I’m a man I want instant gratification your projects are mostly things I can sit down and see a tangible item in an afternoon. My favorite thing is the written instruction. Videos are great if I get hung up and need the visual but mostly I just keep having to rewind them six times to get the stitches or pause because I’m not as fast as the blogger. Inevitably I lose count my project looks off and I unravel take my ball(of yarn) and go home. Thank you you keep this hobby relaxing and enjoyable.
